A newer technique on the skin-care front is ultrasonic skin rejuvenation. The procedure is relatively simple: A technician spreads a gel containing amino acids, antioxidants and skin lighteners to the affected area. The heat generated by the wand helps the gel penetrate the deepest layers of the skin and lets the ingredients work more intensively than if they were applied only on the surface of the skin. The heat also stimulates collagen growth, which helps skin look firmer and tighter.

According to a national survey conducted by Tahitian Noni International, a global, research-driven products company, only 17 percent of American women are willing to undergo cosmetic surgery, and just 27 percent have tried non-surgical treatments to reveal younger skin.

Although cosmetic treatments such as face-lifts, laser surgery, microdermabrasion and acid peels have been on the rise for the past eight years, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the survey's results identify a new trend in which American women are seeking alternative methods and skin care regimes that will yield the same youth results as seen when undergoing cosmetic surgery and non-surgical treatments.

"This shift away from harsh cosmetic treatments and surgery shows there is a growing demand for regimens that are gentle and assist in achieving younger-looking skin," said Ann-Celeste Billings, director of personal care for Tahitian Noni International. "Women are purchasing facial products that combine natural ingredients to restore skin to a supple, smooth ideal state and stop the visible cascading effects of micro-swelling." The survey also found that nine out of 10 women use some sort of skin care regimen to fight aging and micro-swelling - the skin's natural reaction to harsh elements. Additionally, the survey found that 85 percent of women prefer the convenience of at-home facial treatments to those at a doctor's office.
